KNOW YOUR LIMITS
The Law Society’s Professional Standards Scheme
Choosing the right lawyer is one of the most important decisions you will make when navigating the legal system. As part of this decision, you may want to know how much you can potentially recover from your lawyer if you are unhappy with the services or advice they give you.
The Law Society’s Professional Standards Scheme (Scheme) seeks to improve the professional standards of its members and protect consumers, like you. As a recipient of legal services, you are well served and protected by ethical and competent lawyers. The Law Society of NSW has developed and implemented a number of activities, strategies and services to enhance the professional standards of its members.
Members of this Scheme can cap the amount of damages you can recover from them – it’s important to be aware of this information when you are engaging a lawyer.
So how do you know if your lawyer is a member of this Scheme? If a lawyer is a member of this Scheme, all documents given to you as their client or prospective client must include a statement to this effect.
